Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189
Skilled migrants who have not been sponsored by the employer, a state or territory agency, or a relative in Australia, can apply for the Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa which enables applicants to live and work in Australia as a permanent residents for an indefinite period. Before applying for this visa, the applicant is obliged to submit an Expression of Interest through Skill Select, whether he/she is onshore or offshore.
New Zealand citizens who intend to apply for this visa are required to apply under New Zealand Visa Stream.
Who should apply for this visa?
Applicants applying for the Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:
- Must be fluent in the English language,
- The applicant must be below the age of 45 years,
- Must hold appropriate skills for the occupation,
- The applicant must score at least 60 marks (passing marks) in the Skilled Migration Points Test,
- Must have been invited to apply for a skilled visa in Australia.
What this visa allows you to do in Australia?
The holders of this visa, have the permission to stay in Australia as permanent residents, for an indefinite period. The visa holder is also offered a travel facility that allows them to travel to and from Australia for 5 years after application. When this 5-year period comes to an end, individuals are obligated to obtain the Resident Return Visa (RRV) if they wish to move to Australia.
Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa holders can avail healthcare services and enroll in Medicare (a health insurance plan). Once they have qualified, they can sponsor eligible family members to Australia for permanent residence.
Eligibility Criteria for Skilled Independent 189 Visa
Visa applicants must meet the following criteria when applying for the Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa:
- The state or territory government must have nominated and invited the applicant if they wish to apply for the skilled visa in Australia,
- The applicant must qualify for working in Australia by meeting skilled occupation and other requirements,
- The candidate must meet health and character requirements.
Please note that in the case of visa cancellation, you are no longer eligible to apply for Independent Visa Subclass 189.
